Of strong and simple form, this antique Ashburton marble fireplace surround offers a particularly impressive period chimneypiece.
The square shape delivers a clean and masculine silohuette with an elegant deep panelled frieze with thumbnail details that are echoed down each jamb.
Ashburton marble is a very distinct and beautiful marble full of character that originates from Britain. The iron oxide minerals often give the stone a distinct pink colouration which can appear in many shades through to dark red and maroon. It is the only 'marble' recently produced in Britain and it was an important export to South Africa, Hong Kong and particularly to the United States, where it is seen in public buildings including the President Roosevelt Memorial.
